Dear community,
As we enter the season of reflecting and reconnecting, we have a fun post for you today: a series of rich, bold visuals from across the world — in holiday colors, as it happens — of a curious talisman that adorns doorways across the globe year-round.
In three very different cultures, for varying reasons, dried chilies — with or without other accompaniments — function as decorative talismans outside homes, businesses, and other doorways. Below are three photos I’ve taken in three very different places — open to your guesses as to where they might be (take a guess in the comments!) — that share in common this central curiosity:
Give us your best guesses about where photos A, B, and C are taken in the comments! And next time, I’ll reveal each place and share more about the ways in which each one actualizes this particular custom.
Holiday well-being hangout
This week, on December 6th, at 9 am PT / 12 noon ET, we’ll host a special hangout with paid subscribers about how to protect our well-being through the holidays.
We’ll talk about boundaries, fostering meaningful connection and reflection, and countering reactivity — as well as anything else you’d like to cover.
I hope you can join us! RSVP here.
Check out other recent posts that help us be our best selves year-round, but that can be especially useful in this season.
Wishing you light,
Dr Devika Bhushan
Thank you for sharing this wonderful tradition. I love seeing what other cultures do for the holiday season. I'm going to take a guess and say that B was taken outside a bank and C inside an art gallery.
