Dear community,
As we wrap up 2023, here are some posts that you may find useful for the holidays:
Many of us will be on the road in the next few days. And traveling with children, especially young ones, can be a particular challenge. After spending two full years nomadic with my husband, and then one full year nomadic with our son, I’ve got some advice for you — on how to travel well with kids.
Here’s our story: Three weeks after my son, Rumi, was born in San Francisco, CA, our close friend based in wine country — two hours north of us — made us an offer to swap homes. And there began our family’s nomadic life — we spent several weeks up there to start, and then Rumi’s life between 3 and 6 months was spent in Rome, Italy and Sevilla, Spain. This year (2023), when Rumi was 1 and 2 years old, we’ve spent time in Delhi, India; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Mexico City and Oaxaca de Juarez, Mexico, and Santa Fe, New Mexico, United States.
Previously, my partner and I had spent 22 months (between 2016 and 2018) living and working nomadically in Europe, the Middle East, North Africa, and Asia, so we had a lot of systems around nomadic life figured out.
Nomadism with a kid is definitely unique — and in some ways, even more delightful. Our son has inherited our love for adventure, and luckily, thrives in new environments (and with new caregivers). Even though the logistics are more challenging and the pace is more kid-led, it’s been remarkable to view so many new experiences through his curious, wondering eyes.
After all our family’s trial-and-error learnings, here are my top tips — which I bet will be useful for anyone planning to travel with kids in the next few weeks.
